If your Mac notebook or desktop computer has more than one port like this, each port supports Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C. If you have a device that doesn't connect to this port, you can use an adapter to connect it. You can also connect a USB-C power adapter and cable to charge your notebook computer. Use these ports with displays and other devices that connect using either a Thunderbolt 3 cable or USB-C cable.

The Thunderbolt display is outdated, it's USB 2.0 still, bigger than the iMacs, and been around for quite a while. Apple is known to go all in on new tech and abandon old standards (lightning port, USB-c, ditching the floppy, ditching the DVD drive, etc), they don't let existing aging standards limit their design and development. However, I don't consider this fragmenting of the Apple line-up, it's early adoption woes. In most circumstances, MacOS detects the external display automatically, and you do not need to set it up. You will see that the contents of your Mac screen are shown on the external display. This obviously isn't the perfect solution because you lose the functionality of ports on the back of your thunderbolt display. Plug in the HDMI/VGA cable into the USB-C to HDMI/VGA adapter, and unlock your MacBook Pro. Presumably more products will enter the market to solve this dilemma shortly. Quick google revealed a Kickstarter campaign for a dock that will include DisplayPort. It's built into the standard, however, yes, early adopter woes seems to mean that there isn't a straightforward adapter on the market currently. Now, on my Thunderbolt 3 Mac mini 2018, there is no USB tunnelling, so when I connect a USB device to the CalDigit Element Hub (a Thunderbolt 4 hub that also uses the Goshen Ridge), I see that the USB device is connected to the Goshen Ridges PCIe USB controller (8086:0b27) which uses the AppleUSBXHCITR driver.
